Whanganui Stockcar veteran Dion Mooney finally walked away with a title on the track he knows as well as his own, clinching the Robin Pratt Memorial last night at the Robertson Holden International Speedway. Graeme Barr and Grant Flynn take the points lead to Hawke’s Bay on Sunday in the Lucas Oil Superstock and Quin Buildings Direct Super Saloon series respectively.
Robin Pratt Memorial Stockcars
A 30-car field lined up for the opening heat which was relatively uneventful compared to what was to come, with contenders 667p Hamish McLeod out early and 15p Luke Miers suffering a flat right-front tyre. 9w Bryce Jensen powered to an impressive victory ahead of trackmate 89w Dale Robertson. The second heat featured one of the biggest pile ups of recent memory. Miers was tagged by 82p Roydon Winstanley and they both spun in front of the pack. The resulting collisions saw Miers rolled and half of the field retired once the track was cleared. 75p Sam Prescott won by a whisker from 76p Cameron Renwick, followed by 6v Dion Mooney and Winstanley who both placed well in the opener.
Heading into the final heat Mooney was on top with 57 points ahead of Jensen on 55, Winstanley on 54 and Prescott with 53 points. Early race leader 172p Daniel Burmeister was soon overhauled by Mooney, with 174p Brendon Learmonth giving chase but neither could touch the veteran, who took his first Robin Pratt Memorial title home with 88 points from a possible 93. Defending champion Winstanley finished third and picked up second place overall on 83 points, with Jensen completing the podium a single point ahead of Prescott after receiving attention from 992p Taylor Lampp.
Lucas Oil Superstock Series
A slightly smaller field than opening night still contained plenty of quality, as show by 87m David Elsworth who took out the opening heat in style. 58p Peter Bengston survived a wild ride around the wall but 34p Rebecca Barr was not so lucky, suffering the first Superstock roll of the season at the hands of 38p Zane Dykstra. 94r Dale Stewart resisted the challenge of 8p Jack Miers to win the second heat, but the result saw Miers atop the points charts after two heats, equal with 32p Graeme Barr and Elsworth on 40 points, with 44p Brendan Sharland one point behind. Graeme Barr took out the third heat ahead of Bengston to secure the round win on 63 points, with Sharland third and Miers fifth in the race to secure second and third overall with 60 and 59 points respectively.
Quin Buildings Direct Super Saloons
24p Martin Halcrow made no mistake of the opening race from the front row of the grid, with 34w Matt Eckersley and 5b Steve Flynn caught out by the early marbles and contacting the wall with differing levels of damage. 6b Grant Flynn’s third place from the back of the grid was ominous, and he backed that up with victory in the second heat after finding a way past 27s Joe Ingram. Points were tight heading into the last heat; Grant Flynn on 18, Halcrow 17 and Ingram 16. The bumpy track was creating mischief by the third heat, with Grant Flynn hitting the front past Steve Flynn and Eckersley. Halcrow made a charge into second but fell back to fourth, and Grant Flynn had the round sewn up with 28 points. Halcrow and Ingram completed the podium on a solid night for the pair, scoring 24 and 22 points.
